I "Heart" YouTube.

How, in God's name, did I manage before YouTube?  I am definitely a 'see it to learn it' type of person.  I am very visually-oriented.  School was onerous because of this 'limitation' - I could read something until I memorized it, but I did not necessarily 'get' it.  Except for The Jaberwocky.  I have been known to recite the entire thing without the least bit of prompting.  Other than a glass of wine or three.  It took me YEARS to learn how to knit socks because of that wonky bit about turning the heel and the gusset thingy.  My mother finally got tired of hearing me whine about it and sat me down and showed me.  Once.  I've been knitting socks for years now.

So, faced with installing the door closer on my recently hung (by me with help from the Lithuanian Lawn Guy - who was somewhat more of a hindrance because he thought he knew more than I and, frighteningly, didn't) storm door, I hit a wall.  I looked at the directions in both English and Spanish (both made equal sense), looked at the pictures, and....nada/nothing (I did, however, pick up some bilingual-ness).  I put it down and walked away for a day, hoping that distance would lift the veil.  It didn't.  I tried to ignore it, but that's hard to do, when the wind catches your brand new door and tries to rip it off its hinges.  I am sure some of you will scoff, but I am definitely mechanically challenged.  That, however, never stops me.

(Small watt light bulb) Aha!  YouTube!  You can learn the Macarena - why not how to install a door closer?  And there he was, No-Nonsense Guy, showing me how to install my door closer.  I "heart" Mr. No-Nonsense Guy, too.  A mere ten minutes later....

Ta-da!

One small step for most.  One big, fat relief for me!

I love youtube as well---but with my HORRIBLE dial up internet it is an exercise in frustration. Great idea--just not geared for lousy internet service.
And do we ever get to see a picture of the Lithuanian lawn guy??? THis is intriguing as hell to me!
:D

It's the simple things. I you tubed knitting on circular needles because I mentally couldn't comprehend it. Bingo it was a duh moment a few min into the video. Simple stuff but hard for me to visulize. Great job on the door and closure.

Hey Susan,

Ah, Jaberwocky, that brings back memories. When I was in 4th or 5th grade we had to recite it in front of the whole class, in various forms of emotions. After I did happy, sad & mad, my teacher annouced to the class that I was going to be a great actress one day - lol!

I hate hate HATE the directions that come in put-it-together-yourself packages (or "simple" sewing instructions that just say "gather ruffles"!!!). I mean, come ON! Would it cost THAT much more in ink or pay for a person for ONE day to put out an instruction sheet that actually made SENSE?! And one that didn't leave you with more hardware than you're supposed to have....or worse, LESS hardware. I just recently put together something that had an instruction "pamphlet" that was as big as a phone book. No fewer than six different languages, but they STILL couldn't give comprehensive details!!!
Ugh!
Gonn'a sick that Jaberwocky after the people who let those directions go to the printer.

I've learned a lot thru youtube too! I'm also a visual learner and videos are great for that. You can pause them when needed and/or write down the directions....

I don't know how we all got along before the internet! Not everyone has a useful / handy neighbor :)

Good job. I hate to have to sift thru instruction books in 6 different languages. I don't look at You Tube or any videos simply because it does not work well on my dial up.

cool! Not much you can't find on the internet. I'm pretty sure we have the perfect life, specially here. All the benefit of days gone by with flush potties and internet. It just don't get better than that :)

I learned how to fillet a fish on YouTube, it is truly wonderous! Good job on the door closer thingy! :)

Sue - Dial up is frustrating, all right. I think I have a picture somewhere of the old curmudgeon.

Lisa - That's a great example! I wonder if we watched the same video...

DFW - Oh, to have been a fly on the wall of that classroom!! And, did you follow up on that prediction?

Susan said...

CR - So, how do you really feel about it? I think it's really sad when the pictorial instructions are just as bad - I had one where the 'model' obstructed the view of what we were supposed to be putting together!

Susan said...

Nancy - Yes, thank goodness for the pause button!

Susan said...

Jenyfer - I find that the No-Nonsense Guys are easier to deal with - you can put them on pause anytime you want and they don't try to take over!

TL - I remember when it was just English, then German and English, then German, Spanish and English. Now, besides Mandarin, there's Dutch, Korean, Urdu and Mongolian. Or so it seems.

Petey - Oh, I'd give up the internet in lieu of flush potties! I hope I never have to make that choice...:)

Thanks, Candy! It's amazing what little can make us proud...(or me, in this instance.)

A few church plays was as close as I got. Although, I remember after she said it, my head was in the clouds day dreaming about Hollywood for many days/weeks afterwards.
