Who hasn't needed help when doing something for the first time? And although 'they' say that mistakes are just steps towards perfection (oh, right), wouldn't it just be easier to go to your home library shelf and find a good reference book or ten? There are no Kindles or Nooks (well, maybe a nook or two) in my house. I need to have a good, solid book in my hands to make me feel like it's the place for answers. Of course, I still make all kinds of mistakes, but I think of them as steps in the right direction. That's me, Cleo, Queen of Denial.
Today's giveaway goodie is: The Encyclopedia of Country Living, by Carla Emery.
You are going to need a sturdy bookshelf for this puppy....not to mention a sturdy mailbox....

Oh, oh, pick ME, pick ME!!
I would really like to be able to butcher my own chickens. I know it's probably not that hard but it's something I'm reluctant to do without proper adult supervision. ;-)
I honestly wouldn't know where to start this list. I guess right at the top would be hand milking. Have never been able to master the skill. I have arthritis in my thumbs and am forever trying to adapt the motion to put less stress on my thumb joints but can't quite get anything to work for me. So I end up with very sore thumbs every time I milk.
I want to build a goat milking stand and shed...then I want a goat! I have drug home pallets, tin for a roof, old barn wood (tons of old barn wood)and all kinds of bits and pieces and someday I'm going to build my stand and shed because I just have to have a goat!
Congratulations to all the winners so far, and good luck to MEEEEE on this one! heh
Let's see; skills. I would like to get proficient with our new old Kubota, so I can use it to do whatever I need to around here. As a teenager, I ran a BIG tractor all summer long for a neighbor, so it shouldn't be that hard to get up to speed – if I can ever get the 10-year-old off of it!
I would love to learn all the intricacies of building sheds and outbuildings, I leave it up to hubby so it gets done faster, but those measuring and tool skills are really something I should develop as well, especially when he is deployed for most of the year!
I'm not entering for this one because I already have this wonderful, wonderful book! It really is one of the coolest books for self-sufficiency, etc, She has everything in there.
Anyway, I guess what skills I'd like to learn are some minor building/fixing - ie with power tools. I have a husband who can do all that, but he never has time. I have time but don't know what I'm doing!
You and I really are twins separated at birth! (And by seven years.) I have this picture in my mind of a stone wall around the whole garden area. Right now our lawn goes right up, into, through and around both the raised beds, the field garden, the pumpkin patch and strawberries and blueberries and raspberries. If I could get that stone wall built, I would put some other kind of walkway material in the gardening area and not have so much to be kept mowed. Took a stone building class several years ago and really liked it. What say we both do it? Learn to build stone walls, I mean. 'Kay?
Oh boy!! I'm so glad I came out of my self-imposed blog exile in time for this!
There are so many skills I want to learn, but I'd like to learn how to save seeds, tap a maple tree, build a cistern, and spin wool. Those are on my bucket list, so hopefully my bucket will stand a little longer so I can check those off!
I would love to plant some fruit trees and bushes. And learn how to take care of them naturally without pesticides. We have a lot of deer, so I'd like to learn how to work with that. There is so much more that I want to learn!!!
Thank you, Jessica
I LOVE this book! I actually had two copies, but gave one away. Don't enter me today, still waiting on the others (did you purposely put them at the end of the week just to keep me waiting?!?!).
I would LOVE to learn how to keep bees. Or spin wool. Or cat hair....got lots of that.
Oh my. If I really had all the space I needed, I would have a milk cow. I can remember my Grandma's milk cow. And all of the fresh cream, mixed with blackberries in the summer. Wow, the thought makes my mouth water. I would love to have this book, as I also need to build a chicken coop. I'm just starting with animals and actually live inside city limits, albeit at the edges of town. But checked and I can have up to six chickens, just no roosters. Am also thinking of keeping rabbits, but haven't made a definite decision on that yet. Anyway, I can't afford to go buy books, so this would be a great boon to me. Even if I'm not chosen, I want to say thank you to you for this great giveaway, all of these books will be so useful to whomever wins.
