I have been thinking that it would be fun to host a Halloween party. Then I sat down to make a list of people I could invite and realized that most of them are not around - having moved, passed on, got busy, had major life upheavals. This was slightly depressing. I hauled out my three holiday decorations (fake lit pumpkin bought at a major discount for no discernible reason; black cat face a friend made and I love; my adorable quilted spooky pot holders from YouKnowWho) and that's the short and tall of it.
I am still picking strawberries. That's right. It's almost the end of October and I am picking about a pint every other day. Of BIG strawberries. I will be sad to see them go - there are lots more unripe berries and even flowers, but we are entering into the freeze zone, so they are not long for this world. My raised beds are pretty easy to maintain - I've cleaned up most of them, with the exception of raking out all the mushy little cherry tomatoes from the tomato bed. Once that's done - if ever, the way I'm feeling - all that's left is to set up the hoops over the kale and Swiss chard beds in preparation for...snow. There, I've said it.
After getting random whiffs of gas for quite a while (says Cleo, Queen of DeNial), I finally called the propane company that delivers my gas to ask them to take a look. HELLO! We went into full terrorist attack mode. I had to leave the office and drive an hour to the house to meet the service guy. They had padlocked my tank. After performing a host of tests, it was determined that they were in the clear and it was a problem with my stove. They then re-padlocked the tank and left. WTH? This would mean that, had I wished to have the stove serviced to fix the problem, I would have to coordinate (hahahahahaha) the repair call with the gas tech call. Which would mean that I would have to pay two more service calls, whatever the repair bill was, and that would all have to come together in a perfect universe of schedules that does not exist on this plane. I huffed my way to my favorite Vermont family-owned appliance store on Saturday and bought a new one. I realized that this was the first time I had actually been in the store. I have purchased my other two appliances (freezer, washer) over the phone. I had the gas company on my cell and coordinated the delivery of the stove with the arrival of the gas company rep. Easy peasy.
Not.

After going from Friday to Monday morning with no stove/oven, the stove arrived but the gas company tech did not. A call to their Customer Service Manager (who needs another job - that doesn't involve contact with the public) revealed that - Oh, lo and behold! - my appointment was actually at 1P. I will not go into the gory details, but the delivery guys were gems, disconnected my old stove, even though they were not 'allowed', and hauled it away. The gas company guy didn't show up until almost 4P. Why is it that people are so fast and loose with other people's time?
Huff. Bernie, who has, up to this point, spent most of her time in the very back room away from us, is now sharing Scrappy's sofa. Apparently, he doesn't mind.
I swear Bernie sleeps with her eyes open. As you can tell, it's been cold at night... |

Man, those look like some really Chilly Dogs! Today is the third day I've HAD to consume hot tea first thing in the morning. Oh, and although I do like the new stove, I LOVE that yellow color on the wall behind it. I may be so inspired by it that I may just paint our wall behind the stove that color. Eventually. :)
Carolyn - I love that color, too. I painted over the mind-bogglingly busy patterned wallpaper (vinyl). It really brightened up the kitchen! Chilly is different for each dog - anything below 60 drives Scrappy under the blanket. Bernie? She's good to 20.
Murphy's Law alive and well at your house? Enjoy your new stove.
TL - Isn't that true? I might as well change my name to Murphy! This new stove is a whistler - it even has a 'true simmer' burner! It will be a thrill to know the actual temperature of the oven...
Susan,
I believe it's a pact all service people are members!!! I'm surprised you actually got a hold of a person and not a recording.
I remember last year we had a problem with our furnace (a part seized up), we had to go with out heat for 24 hours because the company couldn't get a service rep out to fix the darn thing. Our temperature outside was 22 degrees, inside was 52 degrees. We had plugged in our portable heaters and made sure the birds didn't freeze along with the dogs. As for the humans, we had sleeping bags designed for temperatures below zero.
Sandy - I think you're right! It's funny that the rest of the people I dealt with at the gas company (other than the CUSTOMER SERVICE guy) were very nice. Go figure.
My head is reeling after reading your babbling brook . . . I mean post. I do so enjoy when you just write all that is running through your (very fertile) mind.
You're still picking strawberries?!! How can that be? The last part of October is NOT strawberry season. So stop it right now. Or send us all some. Soooo jealous . . .
I have never heard of the propane company padlocking YOUR tank!! WTH, indeed!!! Glad you got the new stove, though. I think you'll like it once you can look it without fuming over all the hassle. And, strawberries this late up there??? That's astonishing but wonderful. Hope the next week is much better for you. Stay warm.
I ate a few late season raspberries while working in the garden Sunday, but nothing like the veritable bounty of strawberries you are getting! It must be a reward for putting up with all the other, um, 'stuff.'
Dang. I need a new oven too. They're so expensive though...and I actually have an electric one out in the garage that supposedly works great (sister got a new one). I'm pretty much in love with gas though...sigh...
STRAWBERRIES ?!?!?!?!?!? Oh man....
I too am still getting the odd strawberry. And raspberries are getting a very late start so will probably be stopped in their tracks shortly. The silly tomato plants with green tomatoes and a few blossoms are probably in a for a rude surprise soon too.
Enjoy your new stove :)
It's been mild here too- 70 today, but going to drop 20 degrees next week. Usually by the time Halloween (going to decorate this weekend) rolls around it's pretty cold. Your stove is the exact model of our, except ours is electric. I hope to go to gas next time, so I can pressure can! A bit spendy to run a line, and pull a permit, but it will pay for itself over time. Your new grates look white!
