The Cabbage, she is beautiful...

I know I was going to post pix of my new driveway, but it pales in comparison with this:

I may just give up my garden and rent out part of my neighbor's fertile plot.  Remember those six Savoy cabbage plants that I wheedled into his garden?  Two got so big they split (my fault for not checking on them), while the other four grew into massiveness.

This one is NOT the largest.  Yes, that's right.  It weighs 12.8 pounds.

I had to use my regular scale.  After I dusted it off.

I see pounds and pounds, gallons and gallons, of beet sauerkraut, blueberry sauerkraut and plain ole sauerkraut in my near future.  I would love to hear if anyone has any recipes for canning cabbage - I need all the help I can get!

Wow. No. Really. Wow. I bow down to the Goddess of Cabbages.
I should post a pic of my cabbage failure for you. It's pathetic. Even the cabbage worms won't touch them.

Carolyn - If I had planted the cabbage seedlings in MY garden, it would have been quite a different story.

That is some cabbage!! (You should have put Peppy on the table beside the head of cabbage for comparison. Or would that honkin' big thing have scared the little widget?) Gosh, I haven't planted savoy cabbage in years. Maybe I should try again. In your neighbor's fertile field. Mmmm-hmm, NICE cabbage!

Wow! Now that's a cabbage!!!!
I have never made anything with cabbage since my 3 kids would be gagging :p so I'm not much help but can't you make coleslaw with it??? I'm sure it's super unhealthy but it's soo good homemade :)))

Mama Pea - Nothing scares that little widget! He'd just pee on it... :) I would say it is the size of a basketball. Maybe larger. It would probably frighten Lovey because she is a wimpy girl.

Kelly - Oh, yes, I see TONS of coleslaw in my near future. I do love it, but there is only one of me and only so much coleslaw that I can eat. Besides, I am still working off the 20+ cucumbers in my crisper bin.

Feral - You're alive! :) That is a GREAT idea! I bet if I just blanch a few (dozen) and keep them in the fridge, I could use them as... bread! Does blanched cabbage freeze well?

One fine cabbage. I hope readers send in some ideas on preserving. Using like bread sounds like a really good idea-so fresh and crispy.

Do an online search for "Marcella Hazan's rice and smothered cabbage soup"; you'll find it in a lot of sites. It uses simple ingredients but delivers a lot of taste. And it uses a LOT of cabbage. The "smothered cabbage" part of the recipe can be served by itself as a side dish, and freezes beautifully.

I canned cabbage last year with a friend. We pressure canned it and while we had it in the canner we were reading another person's canning comment on their experience. Long story short , cabbage turns grey when you can it . it tasted the same, it is just not pretty to look at.

Its a simply beautiful, beautiful cabbage.....some corn relish recipes use cabbage?! I used a medium head to make mine. I find corn relish messy but worth it as both a small side dish, mixed in a salad or used as a condiment.
