Summertime and the Eatin' is Easy...

Breakfast in a jar - homemade granola,
fresh blueberries, peaches and almond
milk.

Breakfast at home - Easy over eggs on farinata,
iced coffee, peaches and getting ready to start The List.

This is why I grow round zucchini!  Local grass-fed
beef, home-canned tomato sauce, last year's chopped peppers
fresh herbs, local cheese.
The fact that it is now August has quite taken my breath away!  We have logged over 4" of rain, so I am starting to relax my death-grip on my water buckets.  This coming Saturday, to celebrate my middle sis' birthday, we are off to pick pounds and pounds of blueberries.  I am also hoping to get some day-old corn on sale from my favorite farm stand.  It's all in the timing.  This year's canning adventures are going to be pretty tame - the ubiquitous diced tomatoes, pizza sauce, ketchup, corn, corn relish, salsa, applesauce.  No plums for spiced plum jam, darn it.  No peaches (of the bulk kind) for dried peaches.  I am going to freeze corn, too, as I finally found a good recipe to do so (thank you Kristina!)  Of course, there is the reality that I must defrost my large freezer before I put anything else in it.  It's on The List.

how much do you pay for corn there? i can get fresh picked for 2.99 a bakers dozen and if you buy more, the discount it. i am hoping for a good road trip on saturday to stock up on all kinds of stuff. i go to one farm stand where the women walk into the corn field next to it and pick as much corn as you want.

Susan - stop showing the pics of all the delicious food - i'm starving here! can you find peaches locally? there is a lot of stuff that we can't grow here yet - corn being the big example - but we can buy tons of locally-grown corn and then freeze it to have all year. but my goodness that zucchini with the grass-fed beef looks delicious!!!

sending much love to my workaholic friend! your friend,
kymber

So much produce came in early I already have a lot in the freezer but like yours it desperately needs a defrost. A carefully planned and no doubt complicated strategy is on the horizon.

I am smitten with that breakfast in a jar!--what a terrific breakfast "picnic" idea!

ALL of that wonderful food looks so good! I'm inside here at noon time sipping my smoothie with fresh (frozen) strawberries but your pictures are enough for me to jump in the car and head for New York and your house!

We can get organically grown peaches here at our co-op, but I can't even afford to buy enough for a fresh peach pie without taking out a small personal loan! (Sadness and woe.)

Like a couple others (why didn't we get this done sooner?), I need to defrost and reorganize my big freezer, too.

I go to the farm stand and buy the "scratch and dent " peaches, I make sure I cut away any bad spots, and have plenty of peaches to make preserves. I like to make lower sugar preserves.

Yep, July did zoom by. And I suppose August will do the same. I had never heard of round zucchini.

Nothing as delicious as home grown!

Jaz - The going rate here is 50 cents an ear, but if you buy a full bag (55 ears) it is usually discounted. I would love to pick my own! My favorite corn is from Moses Farm (of Grandma Moses fame). It is fabulous!

Kymber - That's exactly how I feel reading your blog! All that amazingly wonderful food!

Susan - Complicated is right. I don't think I have enough coolers to accommodate all the stuff that's still in there. I may have to resort to waiting until it's cold. But then it will take forever to defrost.

Sue - It is my favorite way to eat my granola! By the time I get to work, the rice milk has permeated the granola and it's like muesli. I also like the salad in a jar thing.

Mama Pea - We didn't get it done because we always think we will have LOTS of time during the spring/summer. Sort of like all that down time we get in the fall/winter.

Debra - It tastes even better than it looks!

LW - That's what I usually do at my favorite stand. But there were no peaches to be had of any condition. I love to dry them and add them to my granola all winter.

Deb - While I am looking forward to cooler temperatures, I feel like dragging my heels to slow things down. I found out about round zucchini from another blogger - they are wonderful to stuff!

It's so dry here in lower Michigan! We've been watering several times a week and haven't mowed the lawn in months!

That is so true.

Cindy - I hope you get rain soon! It has been the hottest driest summer that I can remember.
