How we winterize on the LLF.

A pictorial post.

We put our garden to bed.

We give our rainbarrel a rinse and dry.

We tuck our strawberries in under a nice, thick straw mulch.

We put light where we'll need it.

We batten down the deck chairs.

We secure our alternate fuel source (and spruce up our bird feeders).

We polish our silver.

Okay, I'm kidding about the silver.  I actually polished it while sitting out Sandy.  When I get very anxious, I need to do something repetitive and mind-numbing.  Ergo, the silver polishing.  You can take the girl out of charm school, but you can't take the charm school out of the girl...

I clean when I'm stressed. Oh heck, who am I kidding....I clean ALL THE TIME--but I don't polish silver. Perhaps Mom should have sent me to charm school-LOL!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Susan!

We're about halfway done. Chickens are set, gardens halfway tucked in, tank heaters installed and automatic heaters turned on, big pile of compost in the driveway? Still there. Sigh. Have a nice Thanksgiving! :-)

WE still have get the heater set up for the chicken's waterer.

I think I have one tray of silver.....only polish it at Christmas.

You crack me up! :)
It's pretty easy to winterize here, just make sure the lightbulb isn't burnt out in the well house!

OMG! This is my first year of strawberries and I didn't cover them with anything!!! They are still green as the slight freeze didn't kill them, should I go out there and put a bunch of straw or hay on them?!?!

Ditto with Carolyn - we need to winterize our strawberries here, too. We have blown out the irrigation system for winter and put away all the outdoor furniture. We still need to mulch and heel in plants and get the swiss chard starts out of the hoop house into a cold frame.

Sue - I clean enough to keep the cat hair from reaching my knees... :) Have a wonderful holiday, Sue!

CSL - Hey! I have a nice, big pile of topsoil in my driveway! Cool! (Or, not so much after a snow...) Enjoy your Thanksgiving, too - and lots of snuggles to your beautiful sheep!

GLD - I should have posted a before/after photo on that silver. It was BLACK. And it will be that way again...

Candy - That's it??? Move over - here I come! :)

TL - So, how do you feel about platinum...:)? I hope you continue to have nice, soaking rain and a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

CR - Since I am no expert, please feel free to ignore any advice I give...however, I gave mine a nice, close haircut then put about 3 or so inches of straw on them. I am a lot further north than you, so the winters can be brutal. The plastic netting stuff was there (with weights) from trying to keep the mulch on through Sandy. I use straw so I don't have to deal with hay seed. Get out there and mulch those strawberries! Or not... I know - go ask Mama Pea!

2 Tramps - My swiss chard is in the plastic hoop house you see in the first pic. It will last a good long time - sometimes it will still be fresh after the hoops collapse under two feet of snow!

I keep thinking I'm ahead of the game with winterizing and then the temps go back up again - supposed to be near 60F tomorrow! My strawberries have a layer of mulch and that is it - and are still trying to bloom, lol

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
I have one question for you, did you winterize your water hoses and faucettes outside? I had to run outside and do this one night when hubbys was away the temperatures dropped to 24 degrees. I was wrapping our faucettes with a grocery bag and insulated tape, rolling the hoses up and brining them into the garage. Hell, now the temperature is back up in the 70's, I can't figure this weather out.

Jenyfer - It's getting impossible to plan for winter - we never know when it's going to start! Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Susan said...

Michelle - And all the very best to you and your family on this special holiday!

Susan said...

Linda - Our pinkies are raised and we're ready for anything! :)

Sandy - Yes, the hoses are drained and rolled and I have built a fortress of hay bales around my outside (supposedly freeze-free) faucet. It is sort of like wearing a belt with your suspenders, but I'm taking no chances! Have a very wonderful Thanksgiving with your family!

We had a weird mild fall again- 55 on thanksgiving! We did a lot of prep last month but the grass is still green :) Winter is coming (someday) and it's always good to get set for who knows what. Good job!
