Monday Musings.

It is humanly impossible to maintain a diet during February.  This was my mantra as I slid the world's greatest comfort food into my oven last night:  Buffalo Chicken Lasagna.  You read that right.  I tried to make light (pun intended) of the fact that I used partially skim milk mozz and ricotta.  And, after all, I HAD to make a dent in the case of brown rice lasagna noodles I got from the co-op, didn't I?  I hunted down (then changed my mind) low-fat white cheddar.  I mean, really.  I rationalized that it was chicken and not beef that went into the sauce.  I called upon my foggy recollection that spicy foods were not only good for you, but ramped up the metabolism (hot wing sauce - aLOT of it).  But I couldn't pull out of my hat-of-delusion any rationale for the 7 oz of blue cheese.  But, let me tell you, it was G.O.O.D.  Picture hot wings without finger-eating and bones, all cheesy and oozy and gooey.  God help me.  As it made enough for a small army, I was very, very good and cut it up in single-serving portions and froze it.  ASAP.  Is it Farch yet?

This morning, I made a three-hour round trip journey to meet and deliver some of my Barnevelder hens to their new and enthusiastic owner.  It was a little intimidating to wake up to very low single digits this morning (a whole 3 degrees) and there was a tiny bit of whining to be heard.  Especially when I realized I had forgotten to dig out a space behind my chicken yard gate to allow me to open it.  Soooo, I paraded a dazed hen out of the coop, across the poultry yard, through the house and out the front door into the waiting crate four times.  Canines and felines were very excited.  Barnevelders are some of the most mellow chickens ever and didn't seem to mind the trip.  It was a beautiful morning, temperature be damned, and the route from my house to Greenfield, MA is so picturesque - it winds up and around and over the mountains, with a hairpin turn and spectacular views, through park lands and past icy streams.  It was, all-in-all, a most pleasant journey.

And now I am doing my very best to ignore the fact that I tore up a portion of the living room carpet and need to start tiling.  I did order all my seeds, strawberries and replacement chicks this weekend.  I also spent most of Sunday talking.  Pity the poor person who lands within my reach that is interested in farming, homesteading and animals.  Two such souls were subjected to hours of my jabbering and they were very good sports about it.  All the arrangements have been made for Sage's 'lying in' at the end of March.  I will have to get a good back view shot of her.  She looks like a tiny steamboat.  Or a barnlet.  It also appears that Chickie is going through sympathy gains to make her feel less alone.  He is very sweet that way.

Sounds like you have a busy week of tiling ahead of you. Unfortunately I know to well your struggles with comfort food.

Ah, your trip to Greenfield, MA, and back sounds just wonderful. I love car trips through scenic areas (when I don't have to drive) and I would have been such a good companion for you this morning. Why didn't you ask me to go along for company? True, you would have had to let me know about this adventure about a week in advance so I could first arrange to drive three-days straight through to get to your place . . . but oh, it would have been a lovely drive with you. (Yep, it's a dismal gray day here, temp is a weird 30.8 degrees so no wonder it feels damp out there. Chills ya to the bone, I say, to the bone! No wonder I'm feeling wonky. No wonder I want to go for a drive through scenic territory.)

No fair, Mama Pea has 30 degrees, I had 1 and you had 3!

You are so nice to deliver the hens! Usually the purchaser does the driving. I hope you added on for fuel ;) I bet the Guineas were sad to see them go. Less chickens to terrorize.

Your lasagna sounds yummy! I agree about February not being a good month for dieting, must be the weather.
It sounds like you had a lovely drive delivering the chickens. A scenic drive always makes me happy, love a good road trip! :)
Try to stay warm. We are near 70 again today but there is cold, WIND and rain starting tomorrow. Blech.

Michelle - I have put down three rows - it's a big room and even reasonably priced tiles add up, so it is a pay as I go project!

Heck-a-rooni, Mama Pea, had I known, I would have put off the trip to give you time to get here! Such odd weather for you. That temp is really the pits, as it DOES make it cold and damp. It would have been a ball to have you along for the ride!

When I left your place so early a couple of weeks ago and headed towards Greenfield, the sun was coming up. It was such a beautiful sight that it made me weep.

Jane - Is it just me, or is the weather turning upside down? Since when does PA have colder weather than Minnie-soda? Ah, yes, I think the Barnies were so relieved to see the tail-end of the Guineas that I could have shipped them to Alaska and they'd have been happy. Evil Guineas...

Candy - I just couldn't resist this recipe (from the latest Taste of Home Magazine). I love spicy food! It was a lovely drive and the fellow who bought the Barnies was very happy to pay me for the delivery. 70 degrees? Oh, how I wish! Blech is right on the cold wind and rain business - bundle up!

Oh, Nancy, you would LOVE this dish! It warms you from your toes to your nose!

Sylvie, I had forgotten how beautiful it was from our drives to Portland before you moved. If I had had more time, I would have pulled off just to soak in the view at least ten times. It is so amazing.

Yea to ordering garden stuff!! I need to get myself organized in that regard. The lasagna sounds great. I also freeze a lot of stuff. Not just to get it away from me (although I love frozen brownies) but because I get tired of what I've made after 3-4 meals in a row (sometimes less).

Onward towards spring. It's been a weird springy winter here, and seems like Spring might just sort of happen without winter ever really getting here. Weird.
