Monday Musings 1-7

This feels a lot like True Confessions.  The following are the first (well, first-ish) victims of the great purge.

1)  I attribute most of this selection to the Magpie Syndrome.  You know, a bright, shiny object pops up and you lose your mind.  So it goes with the Crocs.  Though, they are not bright nor are they shiny.  Nor do they fit well or do anything to jazz up my wardrobe.  M/W size 6/8, if anyone is looking for a pair....

2)  Not all things should be purchased online.  At 4 AM.  This manicure kit looked more like something Edward Scissorhands would pull out than what I had in mind...

3)  This Anchor Hocking covered dish protected my cheese stash for years.  Then I moved into this house with its confined (and not-too-useful-in-my-book) side/by/side fridge.  It was too commodious so off it goes.  It has already found a new home, thanks to Facebook.

4)   I have dragged this adorable but amazingly difficult to fill rabbit eared salt mill around for decades.  Time for it to go.

5) A potato ricer.  Really?  And I needed it .... why?  It is another example of my weakness for kitchen implements.  It is a very nice, sturdy tool but I mash my taters with an ancient masher and I ain't going to change.  No how.

6) How many kitchen thermometers does one need?  Not as many as I have in my kitchen gizmo drawer, that's for sure.  A nice thermometer but I don't use it.

7)  I love this spiral cutter, but I got a new one for Christmas and I am afraid she (who will go unnamed and who never sets a foot in my house) will notice if I am using a different one.  Guilt strikes again.  These things are so cool and I am sure it will ease the burden of someone's zucchini bumper crop.

I know what you mean with kitchen gadgets--I'm a sucker for every new one that shows up. And then........well, most of the time they get put into the box to go to charity. Really, all I really need in the kitchen is a great knife.
Though, that Spiralife looks like fun.............

I'm the opposite of you two, Susan and Sue. Give me a wooden spoon and a good chef's knife and I'm set. My husband often sees some kind of a kitchen gizmo and asks me if I'd like it. Nope. Thanks, but I don't want to have to find room to store it. Plus, I'd probably never use it. Do you suppose I'm severely lacking in some kind of homemaker/kitchen-ish gene?

That manicure kit looks like something you could do dental surgery with. ;o)

I would snap those Crocs up in an instant . . . but I have defective feet and can't wear them. (I've tried.)

This serious purging of yours is more fun than the proverbial barrel of monkeys. You should really write copy for an ad agency.

I am in the midst of downsizing a bit. Haven't made it to the kitchen but I'm sure I'll find many things, like you, that I bought & only used once, or in some cases never at all. Good luck clearing your shelves & drawers.

I so agree----I hope Susan can keep up with the weekly purge review---what a hoot!

Don't be too hasty to get rid of the potato ricer. It's the best thing I've found for squeezing the moisture from cooked greens. No more tea towels with permanent green stains!

crocs - they shouldnt be handed out THEY SHOULD BE BURNED...

Bogs. Bogs all the way. We'll get a gofundme acct for your selection of footwear if you go the crocs route again, okay? This is friend to friend - we care - we are just trying to delicately not hurt your feet sensibilities....we care... really. Bogs.

NO MORE crocs ! *shudder*

BTW how could you possibly make #5, a potato ricer look obscene? But you did! Couldn't you have positioned it any other way? LOL

Carol - You are enabling Susan in her attempt to rid herself of clutter by getting rid of one item a day. It is definitely counterproductive to her progress to provide her with any excuse (no matter how rational) for taking that ricer back into her possession.
P.S. - Can you tell I used to be a social worker LOL.

Perhaps you meant "thwarting", rather than "enabling"? My intention in commenting was to pass along the tip about using a ricer to remove moisture from cooked greens.

I have to say that I love these spiral cutters (my knife skills are not as advanced as Mama Pea's).....

I'm nothing if not a hoot...:) and I am not able to be separated from my (large) collection of wooden spoons!

Two places where I have trouble downsizing is the kitchen and the yarn stash!

What a brilliant idea!

Susan said...

So, what are your true feelings about Crocs...?

Susan said...

omg. Just natural talent I guess. :)

If you ever decide your (large) collection of wooden spoons needs to be made smaller, you know who will be happy! ;o}

I hadn't realised I had any voyeuristic tendencies but I have to say I'm loving watching the purge-eagerly waiting for next installment. Don't in any way hold back.

Fun read! And the spiral cutter--never heard of them. I take it I might be in the Dark Ages of kitchen do-dads! Which brand do you recommend, the magpie asks. I own a pair of Crocs when they were STILL made in Canada. (Now made in China and perhaps the downturn of any quality.) They were bright orange and I wear them as garden clogs unless I'm digging with a shovel.

Hubby bought me one gadget from a fundraiser last year. Even the kids are stumped. It's a hand tool to mash and mix ground meats with. I'll never use it. Off to the thrift it goes.
