Eureka!

It's the first Barnevelder egg!  I had expected it to be darker, I will admit, but it is a beautiful egg nonetheless.  And I had expected to find it in their nesting box.  Instead, it was sitting in the muck in their run.  It must have taken the pullet by surprise -- "OMG, what's happening?"  I can't wait to see if there are any other little brown surprises waiting for me IN the nesting boxes.

The shell might turn darker when the little hen figures out the right formula! Congrats!

What Mama Pea said. My Wellsummer hen's eggs started out lightly speckled (and still occasionally come out that way); it took time to get the lovely chocolate-colored eggs I wanted.

Well, that's a relief! I can't believe I am so excited about an egg...but I am. It will be interesting to see how the other four pullets' eggs turn out. I hope one of them has the sense to use the nesting boxes so the rest will follow suit.
