The Bantys step up to the plate.

I have a sneaking suspicion that moulting season will be early this year.  Why?  Could it be the ankle deep piles of feathers in the coop?  The piles of feathers in the chicken yard that have me frantically re-counting my flock members every afternoon?  The fact that, with a pin-head count of 26, I only got ONE lousy egg yesterday?  Could be....

Thank goodness for my precocious bantams.  Not only did Chadwick start crowing and 'doing the Elvis' at a very early age (much to the shock and horror of the banty hens, I might add), but it looks like the little darlings are also precocious layers!

Regular size on top.
Come to think of it, given the ratio of egg
size : banty hen size...
OWIE!

Now, all I need are eight more and I can make an omelet!

Way to go banty girls! Don't you just hate when you are feeding all those chickens and they aren't laying? Hubby always tells them "You could be replaced you know!"

Candy - Why, I've used that threat myself! And other worse threats. But they know I won't carry them out so they mock me.

That was my first thought when I saw the picture: Those are GOOD SIZED bantam eggs! Not only are they precocious, but they're trying to impress you, too.

As for the one egg from 26 hens . . . that's some big, bad moult! (Maybe try my chant: Stew pot, stew pot, stew pot . . . )

Mama Pea - I had to laugh out loud! I haven't tried the "Stew pot" chant - they're going to hear it tonight if they don't produce... :)

Hmmm. I am wondering if I am patting the virtual back of the wrong birds...could these be Blue Laced Red Wyandotte pullet eggs? Does any poultry expert (one of which I am definitely NOT) want to jump into the fray?

Wow, I think your chicken to egg ration is even worse than mine!! Congrats on the banty eggs. I LOVE making Rhiannon teeny-tiny eggs for breakfast. Paul doesn't appreciate it as much. What a weenie.
