I celebrated my much-anticipated long weekend by wrestling with the flu. Sigh. I can usually fend off most germie afflictions with many daily dosings of Emergen-C, sage honey tea, elderberry tea and rest, but this proved too much for my lagging defenses. My mind boggles when the germ-spreading party exclaims, "Oh, I HOPE you didn't get this from ME!" after spending the good part of the week horking and hacking across my desk. No surprise at the outcome, is there?
I have been hemming and hawing about getting a flu shot this year (oops - too late!) but - strain your thinker on this - I got the flu from my co-worker who has a flu shot every year, yet gets the flu every year. I am not a fan of shots and vaccines, although I do get a tetanus shot, given my propensity to gouge myself with wire at every opportunity. Plus, I went through my little girl lamb, Hickory's bout with tetanus. That got my attention.
As I get older, I grow more intent in distancing myself from Western medicine. Whether this is wise or not, it is what it is. I am so appalled by the state of health care in this country (world) that I don't want much to do with it. Somehow, being in touch with your own body, eating healthily, making as much of your own food as possible, getting enough sleep (ha), creating balance - this is what really works as preventative medicine. When the occasional illness occurs, using non-toxic remedies makes perfect sense. You don't need three paragraphs of warnings about side effects on your mason jar of sage honey. As long as you don't spray your calendula blossoms with pesticides, you are good to go! After living long enough to have arrived full circle on most of the dire warnings put out there by the 'experts' - Chocolate is bad! Eggs for breakfast will kill you! No more coffee! I now feel free to ignore them completely.

So, (hehe) where art thou Catina? If I don't hear from you by Wednesday this week, I will do a second drawing for the ear warmer.

In my opinion the biggest failure of modern healthcare is not promoting wellness and prevention. This would include addressing poverty and cleaning up the environment. That route, however, would not make money for the outrageously greedy drug and insurance companies.
Hear! Hear! Well said, Susan. I guess there is no money to be made in ending poverty and cleaning up the environment. The world seems to be based on greed instead of compassion.
Susan, I would rather cure an illness through use of natural items grown or obtained naturally. I hear the flu shot this year is a new dosage, and so many end up getting the flu even after getting the shot. When I used to work in the government world it would bother me to have those around me come in on their death beds hacking, sneezing, and running a temperature. When a person is that sick they should really stay home. Now a days, people are really only looking out for themselves, not those they work with. I hope you're feeling better soon.
Yes, no one wants to use a sick day here - they were inspired to roll everything up into PTO (personal time off) whether it's vacation, sickness or whatever. I'm about to hang a hazmat suit by my doorway and make people put it on before entering.
i've had a cough for weeks but tough crap! no way am i going to a doctor. when i get sick i curl up in a corner and if i make it fine. if i don't, then i die the way i want to. no big deal. no shots or medicine for me. it's all such a joke!
Just an aside: Eggs ARE bad for you! There have been studies that prove that the eggs laid by chickens in cages in chicken factories are LOADED with tons of the bad chloresterol (however you spell it, too lazy to look it up tonight). But eggs from free range birds eating green grass and bugs and worms and fed organic feed? Funny thing, no bad stuff in them. Who woulda thunk it? Sorta like saying spinach is bad for you. Sure, if it's been grown in dead soil and sprayed a few times with poisonous sprays. Okay, pushing soap box back under bed. G'night. :o]
Yes, so many Dr.'s promptly hit the prescription button before at least trying the better approach of life style change.
Has anyone noticed the horrible increase in health issues ties to the development of Industrial Agriculture and modern food processing.
PS: We do not get flu shots, so far no flu for 5 years, we have acquired a cold or two Ralph brought home from work......
I'd also recommend vitamin d3, great for the immune system! I also use essential oils on the bottom of my feet, works great!
I have nothing good to say about our medical INDUSTRY after my own recent run-in with them. I will say--they are good for mending a broken arm or stitching up a cut, but that's as far as I go. I truly believe eating healthy, getting adequate rest, and lots of exercise all do far more good than a vaccine. I've read too many bad things about them. I will NEVER get a flu shot. Some of the sickest people I've come across had theirs. The only ones benefiting are the drug companies and those wise enough to invest in them.
