In my purging quests, I have come across some real treasures. This, for instance. Anyone know what it is? It was made for me by an acquaintance who had done a stint with the Peace Corps. It's a low-tech brooder! Little chicks go inside all the nice, warm strips of sweatshirt material and cuddle together and keep themselves warm. It was designed to be used in places that had no electricity. Awesome-Sauce! No matter how awkward and difficult it is to store, I will not part with it. It falls under the heading of "You Never Know".

Hunh. I may have to think about this one for a while . . .
Do the strips hang all the way to the floor of the brooder? Wouldn't they get stinky/poopy in short order? Are there strips fastened to the whole top lid? Like making a dense "forest" inside the box of strip "trees?"
You have my interest piqued.
Mama Pea - All good questions! The material strips hang just short of the bottom. And yes they are fairly dense all stapled to the bottom of the lid . I used it once during a power outage, and it worked fine!
Seriously low tech with great functionality. And very resourceful - can be made of recycled goods. So interesting!
Susan,
You're prepared, if we lose electric you have the prime tool to use for brooding chicks.
2T - Obviously, someone has some super-functioning brain cells. It is one of those, "why didn't I think of that!" things. Very effective, too.
Sandy - It is very satisfying to be prepared for as much as I can.
