Look at me -- I'm a Bumble Bee!!

Meyers Lemon Tree

A little over a year ago, I splurged and bought a two-year old Meyers Lemon tree.  I love Meyers lemons and figured I could grow my own - one more step on my road to self-sufficiency.  These trees grow well in containers and I happened to have a nice, large pot that will be sufficient for the next five years.  I baby this tree like you wouldn't believe.  It enjoys a sunny vista near the sliding glass doors.  I hang a grow light over it from November through May.  It is misted every other day.  It is fertilized every month with special organic food made especially for citrus trees.  I water it diligently.  Last year it provided me with 7 large lemons!  This year, it has burst into bloom and I very carefully put on my bumble bee wings and, with a fine-haired paintbrush in hand, I flit from blossom to blossom and spread the pollen.  I am hoping for an even bigger crop this year!

  1. You really are devoted to this tree! For as much as I grow outside, I can't seem to take care of anything inside. I have some half dead house plants that can't believe I have any type of green thumb. It must be nice to pick those home grown lemons.

  2. Was it as good for you as it was for them? (I AM SO SORRY! I simply could not resist.) ;o)

  3. Jane - yes, I "L.U.V." my tree. I am not usually good with anything that has to spend time inside - or outside, for that matter. That is why I need to devote myself to its happiness.

Mama Pea - Ah, if only I COULD flit. But I can't. It's not quite lumber, but... I felt pretty good afterward - you'll have to ask the flowers how they felt...heehee

  4. LumberING! I don't want to say the "L" word around my tree - it might get the wrong idea.

  5. I really need to get one of these, it seems everyone is in love with them! I keep telling myself "next year" and then I forget until people post all the nice lemons LOL

  6. Interesting! I have a lemon of some sort - grows just a couple huge, grapefruit sized lemons - well my mother's does. This was a seedling from hers and it has never done anything, not even one bloom. Maybe I'm not treating with the correct amount of special attention.
