#300 is the Magic Number!

Just think.  I have been yakking away to all of you nice, patient people 300 times over the past year and a half or so!  Something must be done to reward you for your humorous and supportive comments, your zany wit, the generosity of your advice and counsel.  How about a giveaway!?

I bet you didn't know that I have a collection of VINTAGE (that's for you, Jane) aprons!  I will 'gift' these three wonderful aprons (all cleaned, ironed and starched - all gently used but in great condition - they are vintage, retro antiques, after all) to one lucky winner!

BUT WAIT!  That's not all -- our lucky winner will also receive a copy of The Apron Book!  It's a great read, full of photographs, remembrances and patterns.  Woot!  The winner will be chosen by random drawing (eyes closed, hand rummaging in hat among tiny bits of paper with your names on them - all very scientific) on Sunday, with the winner announced Monday.  Deadline for entry is midnight Friday.

To enter, just leave a comment below.  You may leave an anecdote about an apron-y memory, but it's not required.  I'm just inherently nosy!  Plus, I love you to pieces.

Oooo, I'd like to enter! Although I do not have any apron-y memories :( Actually, I just started wearing them (when I remember to put them on) and honestly, it's just an ugly white one left over from when my Dad used to own a bar & grill. I've been meaning to make myself one of those old-time, full-front aprons though; even have the material already, but haven't found a pattern I like yet. The search (and procrastination) continues!

Wow, sorry for the babbling. But we LOVE your babbling! AND your aprons! :)

I do love aprons- especially vintage. I wear them all the time, even when I am picking my veggies(just had to throw that word in;) You can not buy a good new apron. Not sure why older material is better, but it washes up so much nicer. I considered them the farm uniform. You can do anything in an apron.

These are lovely, please enter me! My two oldest girls and I wear matching aprons when we work in the kitchen... we got them second-hand and one daughter sewed our names on them so we can tell them apart. Mine says "Mama". New aprons would be just the thing to win; especially since there are 3. The book looks great, too.

Congratulations on #300. I only recently found your blog, and I enjoy it very much.

How can you part with these?? But since you're kind enough to offer them to one of us readers, picture me jumping up and down with raised hand shouting, "Me! Me, please!"

My grandma always had a full length apron on and I remember my mom wearing one of those half aprons on a plastic hoop that you clipped around your waist. (I think they were a fad at one time.)

After splattering bacon grease on (a once) good top last week, it's high-time I got serious about wearing an apron whenever I cook.

Congrats on your 300th post. Don't ever stop!

Carolyn - I always thought that aprons should just be 'serviceable' - until I started this connection. They should be fun!

Jane - At least you did go gather baby veggies in your apron... when I used to get eggs, an apron came in very handy.

MF - How fun! I used to have an apron that matched my mother's back in the day. It felt very special to be in the kitchen, cooking with her in our matching aprons.

Judy - Yes, that polka dot one is very cute - the white stitching is smocked across the top.

Mama Pea - It was a tough decision - but, I hate to say, I have a LOT of aprons and one can only use so many. I have an apron for every occasion. My paternal grandmother was always wearing a full length apron and my mother would put on her 'dressy' apron when they had company for dinner. Ah, those were the days. I'll keep it up as along as I can type and remember my name. xx

Ooh, ooh. Pick me! My favorite time to wear an apron is when I'm hanging clothes on the line. I love having a place to keep the clothespins!

I'm with Mama Pea - are you SURE you want to part with them? That red one in particular!? I love red and polka dots. I recently found a vintage apron at an antique mall that is printed with the map of Florida and all the highlights of Florida in the 60s and I've been hooked ever since. My sister gave me a red check apron she found amongst my mother's things but I haven't worn it yet - I just like looking at it :) I've mostly worn aprons while potting rather than cooking but it would be a pleasure to cook in any of the above!

Love aprons and I don't have one. I have this visual memory of growing up and Mom always wearing an apron over one of her house dresses. She sewed her own mostly, and even did hand stitching of cross hatch etc on her aprons. Oh please enter me. What a nice give away.

Nancy - That is one of the best things about these old aprons; there was so much personal flair added. You are in!

What a great giveaway! Please enter me, please, please!!
Because of MaryJanesFarm, I now have three aprons that I have made, plus some store-bought ones, but a girl can never have too many!! :)

Hey Susan, YOU won MY giveaway today! I think it must be something about posting giveaways.... Candy C. won a giveaway from me the day SHE posted a giveaway, and now YOU post a giveaway today and YOU won! Weird! :)

Candy - Way back when, before MJF became an empire, she got me fired up about aprons, too. And, yes, there is no such thing as too many aprons. Or too much chocolate.

Carolyn - Wheeeeeee! Weird but WONDERFUL! Hear that everyone? The Universe is hooked in!

My mom, being a dietitian and having worked in food service, ALWAYS wears an apron - and has given me several. Unfortunatetly, I have never gotten in the habit of wearing one, but keep them for when a visitor (like my mom ;-) wants to don one.

As a child my grandmother had special aprons for my sister and I. I'll never forget how excited we always were when we got to wear them! :)

Michelle - I hate to admit it, but most of the time I start cooking without an apron! It's usually after I've spilled something on myself that I put one one.

Erin - What a wonderful memory! There is something about grandmothers....

I've managed to misplace my apron in the kitchen remodel last spring. I canned tomatoes with towel pinned around my neck- not at all fashionable so I would LOVE to have these.
My daughter just got a pattern to make a real old fashioned pinafore apron so that is also on my to do list.
I do have one special apron that I don't ever wear. My grandmother made matching golden yellow aprons for all her granddaughters to wear at the party for their 50th wedding anniversary. I would hate to spill something on it so it is stashed away in the cedar trunk.

I think you should do an exhibit at the library.
Would you?

My grandmother used to have the BEST vintage aprons. One of them looked like a giant strawberry, complete with embroidered seeds and ric-rac! She also had one in the stiffest sheer fabric. It was metallic gold and had silver ric-rac. In fact, I'm pretty sure all of them had ric-rac! :)

Aprons have always brought me wonderful memories of my grandmother. I don't think I even seen her without one on. She had so many, I use to admire their designs as a child, each one unique in it's own way. :)

Thanks for a great giveaway & for bringing back my fond memories! :)

Judy - Although at towel will do the job, it just doesn't have the panache, does it? I love those pinafore aprons - that would keep even me clean! I have one half apron that was made by some women's group - all of them signed it. That is one I won't wear. I love it.

Sylvie - That's not a bad idea. You will have to look at my collection and see what you think.

TF - What ever happened to ric-rac!? I would have loved to have seen that metallic one - I've never seen a metallic apron! Women used to have fun with them, didn't they?

Angela - Welcome Angela! Grandmothers + aprons = Love.

I'm just catching up and wow, those aprons are gorgeous! I don't think I could part with them, but since you seem able to, count me in LOL! I would be honored to don the vintage aprons, and I've even been ogling that Apron Book at the bookstore for about a year haha! I got as far as buying some huge oversized turquoise rick rack but that's as far as I've gotten :)

Susan said...

Erin! Wow, we've missed you! You have giant turquoise rick rack!?!?! You lucky girl, you!

I've been following you for a few months, and I love your posts. These aprons are adorable!

PS - Tanglewood Farms - I'm going to start reading your blog simply because you used the term ric-rac! Awesome! My mom went through a phase and everything was ric-racked there for a while. I still have some of the table cloths.

Funny thing - I just put on an old apron last night in the kitchen for the first time in years. I am finally getting wise enough to protect my clothing while cooking. Your aprons would surely improve the variety of styles for me as I go about my kitchen work. And the book would be so fun - I have a vintage apron pattern that was my grandmother's that I hope to sew up one of these days... Please enter me in your very generous drawing - thanks!

Susan said...

Kaye - Thank you so much! Let's all vote for a ric-rac revival!

2 Tramps - I'm guilty of forgetting to wear one often. I've been trying to put one on in the morning and keep it on all day -- it's amazing how useful they are!

Wow! I'm fairly new to aprons but I've found that I love them. I used to just always have a kitchen towel tucked into the front pocket of my jeans, so that it hung out for me to wipe my hands on. I still got plenty messy. I volunteered to help pop popcorn in a big popper at a school and ruined my clothes from the oil......that was when I made my first aprons and donated them to the school so the volunteers wouldn't ruin their clothes. Made myself one and the rest, as they say, is history.

Tina - My hero, Julia Child, always wore a plain heavy-duty chef's apron with a towel tucked into the waist tie. I like the added protection - and I usually need it. But I think a girl has to have something with more pizazz every once in a while!

I wear an apron every day! I just love them. I'm the Lunch Lady at the local elementary school and my work aprons bore me a bit, but I love the vintage collection I have at home...they are like well loved friends.
