Monday Musings 70-76

This was a gnarly purging weekend.  There were mad forays into various corners of the homestead - items flung in piles.  There was angst.  There was wine.  And there was a lot of whining.

1- Handmade oven rack puller thingys.  I like to do my part in perpetuating budding entrepreneurs, but I really, honestly, never used these.  I am in lurve with my pot holders.

2- I don't know if this was a total cop-out but, after much angst on the possibility of sending these to a landfill, I rationalized that they are biodegradable and then put them on freecycle.  One is always hopeful.

3- Cute set that I saved from the landfill.  Honestly, they are too small for my windowsill herb needs.  There has to be SOMEONE who will love them and bring them home.

4- Small enameled round box (is it still considered a box if it's round?) made in China and from China.  Bad mojo memories.

5- LOTS of angst on this one.  I have, however, seen and re-seen every episode of Murder She Wrote to the point that I can no longer be surprised at whodunit.  All 12 seasons, too.  It's now part of the semi-local library where I can go borrow one if I get desperate.

6- Kirk Stieff pewter hollowware S&P shakers.  I'm out of collector mode - perhaps someone is not.

7-  Ah, what a love/hate relationship is wrapped up with this item.  This is the third microwave I've owned in 10 years.  I give them up, then break down and get another.  Then give it up, etc.  However, I did an experiment with this one - I unplugged it and counted how many times I plugged it in to use it over a period of six months.  Twice.  I am strong.  I have a large supply of BGPs (as opposed to large BGPs...)  I can do it.

Of course, you know what happened.  Once I removed it from my mind and my counter, I promptly forgot to thaw the dogs' frozen raw food and immediately thought...you got it.  Three pairs of BGPs and I (wo)manned up and made them a cheese and ham omelet.

I.  Am.  Strong. (ish)

Yay for getting rid of the microwave. (Now don't -- do not -- get another one!) I believe using a microwave changes the molecular structure of food put in it . . . into something your body has no idea how to or CAN utilize. Not only does it do your body's systems harm trying to deal with it, you don't gain any nutrition from it either. The microwaves change the food into something that isn't food! You don't want to do that to your doggie's food either! I know it's so, so convenient, but just like stopping at McD's for dinner on your way home every night would be convenient, it's not good for you. End of sermon. Just my humble opinion, but you can see I feel strongly about it. I'll shut up now. Promise.

Yes! You ARE strong! You're proving that each week by the fantastic job of decluttering you're doing. I want to be strong like you when I grow up. :o]

Oh, shucks, Mama Pea. Yes, your words do enter my mind when I even think about a microwave. It just means I have to plan ahead. Something, alas, that doesn't always happen. However, none of the dogs seemed to mind their omelets. :)

I keep wanting to get rid of my microwave...but hubby uses it on occasion to reheat some leftovers. I cook breakfast. I cook a HUGE lunch (or dinner, as some call it), but I do not cook supper. I always tell him it's probably quicker on the stove--no stopping/stirring/etc, but he does the microwave thing. I'm with Mama Pea on this---I do think it changes SOMETHING in the food. It's too weird..........

I just keep doing a few things a week. Can't even tell it's gone.

I am purging clothing this week, and musical instruments. What doesn't sell will be donated.

What are Number 2? And yes we have left our microwave packed up. I reheat by using parchement paper to wrap things then put them in the veggie steamer or I use the oven.

Sue - I think it's healthier to make your midday lunch/dinner the largest meal of the day. I try to do that, too. It's interesting how deeply the 'instant' food preparation need is imbedded. I agree - microwave = weird.

Gail - As long as you don't resupply, you'll eventually notice the difference. Mine is not even the tip of the iceberg.

Kristina - I like how you do it - all out, then sort. It's much more effective than my little bit here, little bit there approach.

Fiona - They are the dreaded packing peanuts. I feel about them the same way I feel about Styrofoam - loathe it!

dang I was thinking corks? Yes packing peanuts, the bane of anyone getting things shipped! Our cat fell into a box of them in Virginia....she stepped on the lid and it gave way....she looked like she had stepped out of a pop corn popper and we found the Styrofoam forever in odd places!
