More Treasure

The first postcard I ever received.

My favorite teacher of all time.
I had quite an emotional trip Saturday night.  I took three of my five shoe boxes of "Letters" and sorted through them.  It made me quite nostalgic for a slower time - a time when people sat down and put pen to paper.  You had to think carefully of your words, what you wanted to say.  You contemplated things.  You cogitated.  I realized how lucky I have been through my life - I have letters from friends who reached out to me and comforted me, no matter where in the world I was.  I have piles of newsy letters from my mother (who will not pick up the phone - but she was a letter-writer).  I have letters from my sister, written from all over Europe, on all number of materials, as she toured with her band.  I have letters from a dear friend in the Netherlands, chronicling the ups and downs, great achievements, discovery of true love and the celebration of it in her life.  I have funny notes and cards.  I have a few brief notes from my father - all business, direct and to the point.  I have thank you notes from nephews and niece, children of friends.  I have cards with bits of plants and flowers tucked inside.  I have my great-aunt Edie's death certificate and my God parent certificate from my nephew's baptism.  (Thankfully, he managed to grow up just fine without my guidance....and now has a tot of his own.)  I have letters I have written to editors over the years.  I have memorial programs and notices.  I have postcards from my best male friend as he traveled all over the world, and the letter his son wrote to tell me he died.

Emails just don't measure up.

"Emails just don't measure up"---No they do not!
BUT--in defense of emails--I can look back and see what I wrote so I don't repeat some news. But yea, handwritten wins by a long shot!
I wish I would have had the foresight to save my first postcard/letter. I have saved things since I met hubby #2 seventeen years ago.

Most of the time I'm glad I'm not a "saver" as the darn stuff piles up so quickly and I guess I start to feel a little claustrophobic in the midst of it all. But reading this post of yours makes me nostalgic, and I'm sure having saved all those cards and letters that you have would bring back many memories for me that I know are lost forever hidden in the (now weak, or maybe non-functioning?) cells of my brain. What a walk down memory lane for you, huh?

Susan,

E-mails, texts, and electronic notes will never measure up to a hand written letter, note, or card. I miss receiving hand written mail.

Agent X, not said...

I think perhaps, there is a place in the world for both - eh?

Sue - I did jettison a lot of stuff. I don't have to save evidence of past stupidity, for instance....

Mama Pea - it was a wonderful trip down that lane!

Sandy - I keep telling myself I will do more handwritten notes to friends… But my darn old brain cells can't keep up with my good intentions.

Agent X - indeed there is.

Writing letters is a lost art. Heck, kids don't even know what cursive writing is. I won't email. Just got back in the habit of writing notes, cards and letters. What's Martha say...Its a good thing!

I think we should all bombard Sandy's mailbox with a written card or note. Wouldn't that be fun?

I'm with you, Susan, in that I constantly think about sending handwritten notes . . . but everyday life seems to eat up those hours when I plan on doing so. Drat.

i haved saved every single note that the hubby ever wrote me. he used to leave work before me and he always left a little love note in my helmet on my scooter - it was awesome! i used to leave a note for him every day in his lunch box and he saved all of those.

your collection of letters/cards/notes really is a walk down memory lane. i am glad that you saved them all.

on a side note - i used to have really beautiful writing. and now because of working with computers for over 20yrs, my writing has really gone downhill. i keep telling myself i am going to start writing letters and whatnot but just still haven't done so. i need to get off my butt and send Sweet Sandy above a letter!

sending much love! your friend,
kymber

Well, my 14-year-old son is required to use cursive when writing thank-you notes, also required. What he does when out on his own is his business, but this mama is making sure he KNOWS what good manners are!

Did you smooth out that last letter and hold it to your heart?

More than once.

Susan and Mama Pea,

You two are wonderful friends, and I surely know how brain cells work and time fly's. Life keeps us extremely busy :-)
