For those of you who asked for it (you know who you are...)

I am currently not on speaking terms with Mother Nature.  She of the sadistic sense of humor.  Yesterday morning it was 22 and peaked at 33!  This morning was 7 and is heading south rapidly - and I don't mean like tropical south.

I had just shoveled.  Then it snowed
again.  A lot.

Back deck - I'm running out of
room to toss the snow.

From deck to coop.  You can see the
little 'present' the dogs left me.  In
the middle of the path.

Front deck to carport.  Guess there's
no chance of the carport blowing
away...

This week looks to be another repeat of the past three.  Hopefully, without the snow.  I had my friend, Lisa, over for dinner yesterday and the snow piled on either side of the path was almost as high as she was.  She cheerfully noted that, should she fall, she wouldn't go far if she fell sideways.  I ushered her in and we tucked into scalloped potatoes, roasted herbed chicken thighs with cranberry infused sauce, steamed broccoli and apple/peach crisp for dessert.  Then we discussed long underwear, skunks in cellars, egg freezing, milking difficulties in below-zero temps, the price of milk, knitting, families, dogs, and fracking pros and cons.  Actually, there were no 'pros' to the fracking part of the conversation.  I would love to say that my dogs were wonderfully behaved, but that would be a bald-faced lie.  While they do not overtly beg at the table when I'm dining solo, add a guest and there is no getting rid of them.  Pepper little noggin pops up between ones knees.  Lovey rests her little chin on one's thigh and casts worried, starving looks your way.  Scrappy leans heavily, large, sorrowful brown eyes inevitably directed at me - wasting away from hunger by the second.  It is embarrassing.  The best that I can muster is to get them out of physical contact - and then they circle the table like benign sharks.

However, once the guests leave, they do an amazingly thorough job on the greasy pots and pans.  I was thinking of renaming Pepper, "Brillo".

uh oh...poop on the path! at least maybe it is frozen. i am horrified by the fracking around here. we see it everywhere we go and those trucks are always in a big hurry.

Buttons - Oh, no! I hope it comes very soon for you! Too many calves in the basement is NOT a good thing. It has been a very difficult, trying winter for most of us. Sending you a warm hug...

Jaz - It was frozen before it fell... :) I was surprised that it was 'placed' so far down the path - it's usually right below the stairs. Yes, they are trying to run a pipeline through our area. It seems that no one is in favor, but I'm not sure how much impact we can have.

I would be upset with Mother Nature too! I don't do well with cold at all! Such a tough winter for so many this year! We've been a little upset for the opposite reason....lack of winter and rain that we need so badly. Although, temps the last few weeks in the 70's and 80's have been rather nice. And, now, we finally have a storm that dumped rain all night last night. Hallelujah! It's not enough to help with the drought but we'll take all we can get. Your dinner sounds absolutely delicious! Stay warm!

That dinner did sound delicious! Sorry about all the snow.
We can't seem to get any---but we have PLENTY of sub-zero temps. It was MINUS 27 again today. That is the 4th day this week. My propane is disappearing just about as fast as my patience............................

This is the time of year when I go out and howl at the moon, very restorative. I'm impressed by the dogs' pooping precision, is one of them a math genius?

Susan,

I'm over the snow as I type this comment. It snowed again, temperatures feel like 10 degrees with the wind outside. I've shoveled a pathway to the truck, need to head to the Vet for more blood work on the dog with thyroid issues.
In the back of my mind I keep thinking only a couple more weeks before it's officially spring. Hurry up!!!!!

I was afraid you were getting more snow. So sorry. Enough is enough, but too much is way too much. Wonder how fast it will all disappear for you come spring? We had -20.4 this morning. Day dawned loverly with sunshine and stillness. Then the wind started. That is what I'm really sick of this winter . . . the blasted wind. Right now we have what looks like fog blowing through the air. I guess it's a combination of snow picked up off the ground and frozen particles of . . . of what? Some kind of moisture in the air. Very, very strange.

That dinner menu was nasty to tease us with. It sounded WONDERFUL! Yum, yum.

love you blog, it reminds me sort of our last home, when we lived in the country and the funny things that happened to me. We have now moved back into town.

I remember spending more time last winter on making sure the oil man had a good enough path cut out for him to deliver the oil, as no path meant no oil delivered therefore no heat!! Don't miss it, but do miss living in the countryside.

Gill your newest follower who lives in Southern Ontario and YES it has been a bitter cold miserable winter!!

ATO - I try to remind myself that we could be much worse off, even though it's hard to find the upside when you are shoveling almost constantly. I hope you continue to have rain and that the drought subsides.

Susan said...

Sue - Well, I know you can relate to the Arctic temps, although I might fall over in a faint if I saw -27 on my thermometer. Let's hope our dreams of perfect gardens (hahahaha) will sustain us for a few more weeks!

Susan - I have a friend who swears by howling. I might try it myself, but I am not sure if the dogs are up to the shock. Yes, I do believe that Pepper is either a math genius or devious to the bone. Most likely the latter.

Susan said...

Sandy - Hurry up is right! Let's go SPRING!

Susan said...

Mama Pea - I am with you - the wind is the worst! With all this fluffy snow around, once the wind gets going, you can't see your feet or anything else in front of you. It also tends to fill in all the pathways one just finished shoveling. I've had to hide the shotgun AND the hooch. I will have to say that it was a very tasty dinner! And almost totally from the homestead. So satisfying on every level.

Gill - Why thank you so much! It is lovely to 'meet' you!! There is no end to the paths. One for the oil man, one for the propane man, many for this (wo)man. Then there are the dogs, chickens and sheep. Oh, and the car. Geezloueeze. It has been a VERY bittter cold winter up by you!

Do you remember the kids game Hungry Hungry Hippo? You could develop and market Hungry Hungry hounds! Make a million and hire...not a pool boy....but a Snowshovel man! Okay I am demented but I do admire your shovel skills, how do you list them on your resume?
Hang in there and be safe! As to the wee gifty your dogs left in the middle of the trail...it it to stop you slipping...freeze dried traction?

Wow that's a lot of snow. We had 2 dogs that we called our "vacuum cleaner doggies" always caught the crumbs! And always the look of "we're starving to death~~~"

Laurie said...

I nearly died laughing at the visual of Pepper popping up between the knees....hope it wasn't your friend's knees. HaHa!

We had a winter like that last year = so much snow everywhere...no matter where you went you could not see over the snow banks. Made for dangerous and difficult driving. Isn't it the strangest when company is over and dogs amp up their starving routine? Ours do it famously.....stay warm!

Ha, sorry, I have to laugh at the dog poo. Our dogs are doing the same. Just as I get a path to the barn, one plops his business right in my walkway.

Susan said...

Fiona - I do remember it! If only I could market these guys - so far, the only residents that get close to paying for themselves are the chickens! I had to laugh at your description of freeze dried traction! Hoot!!!

Susan said...

Nancy - We've had an 'interesting' winter. That's two in a row. I might have to reconsider my next location if this keeps up!

Susan said...

Laurie - Unfortunately, he pops up between anyone's knees. Sometimes it's a bit awkward... :)

Susan said...

Mrs DM - I was considering putting a tall pole with a flag on it for coming around corners. It is very dangerous when you cannot see a car coming around the piles of snow. Luckily, most everyone around me drives giant trucks. You can still see those!

Susan said...

TL - Ask me next winter.... :)

Susan said...

Kristina - I have christened the pathway, "Pee Alley". I just can't wait until all the snow melts. I am sure there are hundreds of little 'gifts' awaiting the pooper scooper...

Snow - so important for the moisture it brings - but really?? I think you all have had more than your fair share now! My new snow shovel stands so lonely in the garage, having never seen snow since it was delivered over a month ago. I can't imagine what it would be like to have so much snow for so long. But we sure do need some out this way - we are facing a dismal fire season. It is supposed to hit 59 degrees here today - that is just wrong! Our asparagus is coming up and many things are trying to break bud. I do have to say, our dog is enjoying more time outside with this good weather, so no sad looks of hunger here until evening, when he just points to the treat jar and stands there until you notice him!
