In one of my purging exercises, I had unearthed two pieces of Czech hand-craft/art that I have had for, oh, over 35 years. Given my previous lives, it is amazing that I still have them and they are in as pristine shape as they were when they were given to me. (Look familiar, Kenneth?) I had mulled over making them into pillows at one point, but am so glad I didn't. I apologize for the low light but, that's all we have had for months. I believe I will be struck blind when the sun finally arrives.
During her short visit, Sylvie and I trotted off to the fabric store and found an appropriate color (who knew there were so many shades of yellow?) for the background and then we carefully mounted them into the frames I had preordered. Voila! I do not know the name of this particular fabric craft, but it is made by placing layers of different colored fabric, cut into shapes and then hand-stitched around each design. It's beautiful and the colors are much brighter in real life. If anyone knows what this is called, please leave me a comment!
Speaking of lovely - well, in my eyes - I have finished the first of the Poison Candy socks! Love it! They will light my way in dark passages!

I love the socks! Had to laugh at your jim-jams. I've sewed up a pair about 4 times, and they need another fix up, lol!
Can't really tell from the photo but they look like molas, which are from someplace in South America, although I'm sure made elsewhere in the world. I don't really know much about molas but I do have one that was gifted to me many years ago........that I never framed.......
Wow, your pieces of craft/art are beautiful! They look like a combination of applique and embroidery from what I can see by enlarging the pictures. The applique work would have been more difficult to do than you might imagine. The two pieces are gems, that's for sure.

I can't really part with them, as they are just broken in... LOL! Guess it will be added to the dog toy triage pile.
Thanks, Cindie. I got them from an old flame (he was young at the time...) or his sister. They are of Czech descent, so I assumed the pieces were Czech. I will research molas!
Applique! That was the word I was grasping around for (and did not find). I really don't know how they created them, but I am sure it was a painstaking procedure. I love them and am so glad I can now enjoy them. Once I hang them on the wall - a whole nuther ball of wax.

They sure do look like molas. Maybe these particular patterns are more Czech than the SA varieties - of which I am now enamored...

I have some similar fabric craft/art, two small panels in blues and grays that I intended making a small shoulder bag out of for oh, the last 20 years. maybe one day she says as she laughs hysterically.
Mola's basically it is a form of appliqué and likely many cultures have something like it. The colored fabrics are layered, right side up and then the top fabric is cut to expose the fabric(s) underneath. Then it is carefully turned under and stitched to keep it from fraying. It is very labour intensive. They are beautiful! Lucky you to have two in such pristine condition. The jim-jams though.....maybe it's time for them to go to the great Jim Jam Beyond.

The poison candy footwear, simply AWESOME! Pair them with some sparkly red slippers my Pretty! ;-) HA!
I forgot to say thanks for the picture of the sweater. What a beautiful pattern! The intricate knitting, including those awesome cables, gives "loft" to the yarn and actually makes the sweater warmer. Lucky you!
